Leading price comparison website Skyscanner, which until recently concentrated solely on flights, can now offer its users hotel and car hire search as well. Powered by Australian company HotelsCombined, Skyscanner’s hotel search tool provides access to over 200,000 hotels thoughout the world. The Ireland-based website CarTrawler is behind the new car hire facility.

Frank Skivington, commercial vice-president of Skyscanner, said: ‘It’s all part of the strategy for Skyscanner to become a one stop shop for travel, building on our already immensely popular flight search engine.”

British Airways is fighting back against the no frills carriers with the launch of a new value calculator on its website. Several ‘budget’ airlines, including easyJet and Ryanair, charge extra for items such as hold luggage and in-flight meals, making it difficult for customers to directly compare airline fares.

Richard Tams, British Airways’ head of UK and Ireland sales, hopes the value calculator will solve this problem: “With BA, the price you see is the price you pay. It’s been well documented that some of the no-frills carriers charge for a range of ‘extras’ that we consider to be part of our core service, from checking in a bag to food and drinks on board. We’re just making these transparent for customers.” he explained.

The new calculator can be tried out at ba.com/valuecalculator.
